"Do not be influenced by the importance of the writer, and whether his learning be great or small, but let the love of pure truth draw you to read. Do not inquire, Who said this? but pay attention to what is said." ~ Thomas à Kempis

At the beginning of the year, I made a goal of reading at least 1 book per week. I’m already an avid reader albeit, a slow one… on purpose. I like to take my time with a book to digest, meditate, and in some cases, do research about what I read. But I don’t think I had ever read this much in 1 year. I had also accumulated too many books- never finding the time to read them all. What good is it to have so many books and not read them? As it would happen, 2020 turned out to be the best year for reading.

I want to pass on the very best 2020 Christian books I read. I gave a 5-star rating to these 5 books. And if you know of other great Christian books, recommend them down below in the comments!

The Best Christian Books I Read in 2020

2020 Christian Books to Read in 2021

If You Will Ask- Oswald Chambers

I own the complete works of Oswald Chambers and if you can afford it (about $50 on CB) I highly recommend it but if not this is a good book to start with. Oswald Chambers was a phenomenal Bible teacher and writer, his works are sure to make you THINK and CONVICT.

This book was originally a series of talks he gave where he reflects on the power of prayer and the importance of daily communion with God. He speaks about personal prayers and intercession for others and what it means to truly be a Christian grounded on prayer. You will be greatly convicted with Chambers’ bold words and no non-sense style.

Quote: “What makes prayer easy is not our wits or our understanding, but the tremendous agony of God in Redemption. A thing is worth just what it costs. Prayer is not what it costs us, but what it cost God to enable us to pray.”

They Shall Expel Demons- Derek Prince

This is the best book on demonology I have read so far. The late Rev. Derek Prince was known for his deliverance ministry worldwide along with his books and teachings. In this book, he packs a lot of what he has learned about demonic possessions, demonic oppression, deliverance, and healing. Prince, helps you identify between possession and oppression, what to do about it, how to be set free, and how to pray for others. He shares many experiences he’s had and testimonies of people who have been delivered.

A lot of what he discusses I already knew but there is a lot more in here that I had never heard anywhere before. Even if you’re a skeptic, you can learn so much about the way the enemy and his minions operate.

This is probably the most important book I read this year and will continue recommending. Who knows, you may be living with demonic oppression and not know it. This book is a gold mine!

Shadow of the Almighty- Elisabeth Elliot

shadow of the almighty

Have you ever read a book and immediately wished you had read it sooner? That’s how I feel about this very popular book. I wish I had read this book in my teens!

Elisabeth Elliot was a missionary and wife to martyred missionary, Jim Elliot. In this book, Elisabeth tells the life story of Jim using his journal entries and adding commentary along the way. You learn more about his relationship with God, family, and friends. Behind the man, was a great humility and sold-out devotion to God. What I admire most about Jim, was his no-compromising attitude toward his faith, his zeal and passion for the Lord, and his big heart for the salvation of others.

His genuine Christian walk convicted me deeply many times as I read the book and caused me to self-analyze. Jim was way ahead of his years, he was a phenomenal writer and a very mature young man. We don’t see many adults with his level of spiritual and personal maturity nowadays.

Quote: “One of the great blessings of heaven is the appreciation of heaven on earth. He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Rees Howells: Intercessor- Norman Grubb

Rees Howells

I had never heard of Rees Howells until this year. I read about him online and immediately added this book to my TBR. And won’t you know, a few weeks later I found a copy at Goodwill in pristine condition. I was very happy with my find.

Rees Howells was a Welsh minister, Evangelist, and later a missionary. He also founded the Bible College of Wales in 1924.

He is best known for his life-long ministry of intercession. If you thought you knew everything about intercession, read this book, I guarantee, you will learn more. Intercession is much more than just praying for others, it is standing in the gap and suffering along with others. You have to feel the pain of others not just understand it. You have to love with the love of Christ and care more about the salvation of others than about your bare necessities.

After reading this book, I realized that I have never interceded for anyone correctly or fully. You have to be called to be an intercessor, it is a ministry and a calling. But you can learn to pray correctly for others.

Quote: “I hadn’t the faintest idea of the love of the Holy Spirit for a lost soul, until he loved one through me…If you love one, you can love many; and if you can love many, you can love all.”

The Greatest Thing in the World- Henry Drummond

henry drumond

You’ll want to read this one even if you don’t have time because Drummond packed it to the brim in under 40 pages. This little booklet is a very powerful volume on the subject of love. It’s a short study on 1 Corinthians 13 but it’s the best discussion I’ve read or heard on this popular chapter.

This is a book I will keep coming to, to absorb as much as I can because it’s impossible to digest everything in just 1 read. This is definitely one of the best 2020 Christian books I read.

Quote: “I shall pass through this world but once. Any good thing, therefore, that I can do, or any kindness that I can show to any human being, let me do it now. Let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.”

It is a nice feeling to get to learn and know more about the Word of God and be able to follow the path He has set for us.
