Are you looking for devotional books to read in 2022? But you struggle to keep up with devotionals? So do I! I have always had a hard time keeping up with devotionals. It doesn’t help that I’m picky. I like to read a daily message that contains Godly wisdom but that does not simply stir up my emotions.

I want to read a message that will convict me with a profound word supported by Scripture. And let’s be honest, most devotionals today are either too short or not deep enough or both. Uplifting messages are fine but it shouldn’t be at the cost of conviction. I don’t want to feel good, I want to be convicted.

And I’m not alone, I’ve heard many other Christians make the same complaint. Today’s devotionals are simply too light. With that in mind, I set out to look for the best devotional books I could find that served daily meat to the hungry soul. I found several and have either used them in the past few years or plan to use soon. The following 8 devotionals are just some of those. Read along to find out some of the best devotionals I highly recommend!

2022 Christian Devotionals

Morning And Evening- Charles Spurgeon

Morning and Evening

I couldn’t write a list of devotionals and not include this classic. I’m sure many of you have heard of this Spurgeon classic, but if not, I’m glad to recommend it.

This 1-year devotional has one devotion for the morning and another for the evening. Each devotion has a verse followed by Spurgeon’s commentary. Spurgeon’s style is deep, thought-provoking, and Scriptural. He is easy to understand and follow and you can expect a solid daily word.

You can find it in different presentations and Bible translations. I personally like this hardback because it is quite a chunky book and the thick chipboard cover makes it sturdier.

This devotional is perfect for those who enjoy classic writers and are not bogged down by the writing style of the era or simply find modern devotionals too light.

My Utmost For His Highest- Oswald Chambers

If you’ve followed my blog for a while you know how much I LOVE Oswald Chambers‘ works. And this is the book that started it all for me.

My Utmost For His Highest is another classic devotional. It is a compilation of Chambers’ writings and lessons organized into daily devotions. It contains 366 devotions and can be found in several presentations as well. There is the original language version and an updated modern language version.

Chambers is known as an excellent Bible teacher. He breaks down a subject and dissects it for a better understanding of the Scriptures.

What I love about Chambers and what makes him stand out, is the way he can take a topic and present it in a way you’ve never considered before. I constantly find myself deeply meditating on something Chambers wrote because he helps me see things from a different perspective. You can find these Scripture cogitations daily in this devotional.

The Pursuit of God: A 31- Day Experience- A.W. Tozer

Christian Devotionals 2022

I went through this daily reader last December and it was a whole different experience than I had before with this book. It was my fifth time reading The Pursuit of God but my first time reading it through the course of 1 month and it made all the difference. If you’ve read The Pursuit of God before, don’t leave just yet.

Tozer takes you on a journey to get closer to God. He is known for not mincing the truth and calling out your guilt. That’s what he does here in an attempt to move you to pursue God more. Tozer reminds us that God is worth knowing as He knows you.

This edition though, is much more. Whoever designed this devotional did a great job. The text of the book is broken down into 31 daily devotions, each containing a theme. There are black and white graphics, pictures, and doodles that go along with the text. The format reminded me of a graphic novel.

It is perfect for those who don’t want to commit to a year-long devotional and for those who haven’t read the book.

God Is My Hiding Place- Corrie Ten Boom

I read this devotional last year as well and loved it! I’m familiar with The Hiding Place and have read it several times. This devotional was created using selected portions of Corrie’s books and other writings.

It is a 40-day journey into living the Christian life without fear. Using personal experiences while in prison, concentration camps, hiding Jews, during ministry, and others, Corrie recounts how God always came through in different situations.

Each devotion contains a verse or two, a short excerpt from one of her writings, and a pull quote on the side. It contains a beautiful nature picture each day which adds to the peaceful flow of the message. The devotions are short but jam-packed with godly wisdom.

God With Us- Compiled & Edited by Justin S. Holcomb

God With Us

I’m using this devotional this year and let me tell you why I love it.

This is a year-long devotional book containing excerpts from classic Christian writers such as; Bunyan, Aquinas, Augustine, Watson, McCheyne, Bonar, Calvin, Warfield, Whitefield, Spurgeon, Luther, Ryle, Flavel, Sibbes, Newton, Edwards, among others.

Each devotion starts with Scripture followed by an excerpt from a writer corresponding to that particular verse (s). Some days contain more than one commentary from 2 or 3 writers.

Every entry centers around the character and work of Christ. You can find something new each day to learn about Christ and what He has done.

Voices From The Past- Compiled by Richard Rushing

This 2-volume set is similar to the devotional I mentioned above. They are work compilations from classic Puritan writers broken into daily devotions. Each volume has 365 devotions written by Puritan writers; Baxter, Bunyan, Boston, Owen, Gurnall, Rutherford, Sibbes, Ward, Watson, and others.

Each devotion begins with a short portion of Scripture followed by the commentary of a writer. At the bottom of the page, you can find the reference, making it easy to follow up with the book if you wish to read the complete work.

Piercing Heaven- Edited by Robert Elmer

piercing heaven

This is not a devotional per se but it can be used as one. It is a compilation of Puritan prayers created by scores of classic Puritan writers. Some prayers are more than a page long, others only a few lines. Each prayer references the writer at the end.

Start and end your day with these prayer prompts to begin your quiet time with the Lord. I find most of these prayers very moving and soul-stirring.

I did not count the number of prayers contained but it is a small book of 240 pages. The prayers are arranged into topics like doubts, temptations, life, consecration, and others. These are written by men such as; Watson, Owen, Bunyan, Sibbes, Baxter, among others.

The Valley of Vision- Edited by Arthur Bennett

Last but not least! I saved my absolute favorite for last!

The Valley of Vision is perhaps the most popular collection of Puritan prayers out there. I’m thinking Piercing Heaven was inspired by this classic because they are very similar. This one comes in different presentations but I definitely recommend purchasing the bonded leather or genuine leather version because the prayers are so good you’ll want a copy that will last many years.

This collection of prayers is also arranged by topics including; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; Redemption & reconciliation, penitence & deprecation, gifts of grace, approach to God, among others.

The prayers themselves don’t reference the author, so you don’t know who wrote which prayer but the bibliography page does mention the Puritans who wrote them.

These men include; Baxter, Brainerd, Bunyan, Doddridge, Christmas Evans, William Jay, Henry Law, William Romaine, Thomas Shepard, Spurgeon, Toplady, Watson, Isaac Watts, and William Williams.

The Valley of Vision contains over 100 prayers and let me just say you’ll find yourself reading and re-reading it!
